The Hidalgo County Commissioners Court has officially passed a resolution establishing the Hidalgo County Future Leaders Council, a new initiative designed to give young adults a meaningful voice in civic engagement, leadership development and the future of the region. 

The council will connect young adults with local government while providing opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in civic activities and contribute to their communities. 

Mercedes resident Skyler Howell, who will serve as the council’s inaugural chair, said the resolution is the result of months of planning, collaboration and work. 

“What began as a belief that young people deserve a meaningful voice in shaping our region’s future has now become a reality,” Howell said. 

Howell expressed gratitude to Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez, the Commissioners Court and others who helped establish the council.
