The Mercedes community came together on Ohio Avenue for a special “Coming Home” celebration and commemorative street renaming ceremony to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Hector P. Garcia.

Family members, neighbors, community leaders and residents gathered for the dedication of Dr. Hector P. Garcia Avenue, recognizing the lasting impact of the South Texas physician, civil rights advocate and community leader.

The program included a performance of the national anthem by Natalie Olivarez, followed by music from the Mercedes High School Percussion ensemble.

Historical reflections were presented by Rene Rios, an instructor at South Texas College, and Zachary Sanchez, Mercedes High School senior class president. Their remarks highlighted the historical significance of Dr. Garcia and his connection to the community.

A highlight of the ceremony came when Cecilia Garcia Akers, Dr. Garcia’s daughter, announced the establishment of a scholarship honoring her father’s life and legacy.

The event was hosted with support from the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce, with Skyler Howell serving as master of ceremonies, and Chamber President Hector Rocha participating in the program. The American Legion also helped support the gathering by providing food for attendees.
