Interns hired for summer newsroom jobs
It didn’t take long to fill the Mercedes Enterprise Summer Newsroom Internship positions after a call for resumes was posted on Facebook offering part-time summer newspaper opportunities.
The job posting quickly gained attention through likes, shares, and comments, generating emails from Mercedes High School students, college students, and recent graduates interested in gaining newsroom experience.
Over the last four weeks, four interns: Zachary Sanchez, Mercedes High senior; Gabriel Rhodes, Mercedes High School sophomore; Charlotte Hinojosa, UTRGV senior; Julien Juarez, UTRGV graduate, have been working both in the field and in the newsroom, helping gather and report local news for the Enterprise.
Hinojosa of Pharr, who has family roots in Mercedes, responded quickly to the posting, and accepted the role of photojournalist.
Since joining the newsroom, Hinojosa has covered several community events, including Memorial Day observances, the Mercedes History Harvest, the Texas Street Festival press conference, and the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony honoring the 1986 Mercedes Tigers football team.
“I’ve always loved writing and photography, so getting to work with The Mercedes Enterprise feels like a perfect fit for me,” Hinojosa said. “I’ll do my best as I connect with the City of Mercedes and its people.”
Juarez also joined the newsroom as a multimedia journalist and has already begun covering community news, city meetings, and local events since joining the newsroom in late May.
“I am extremely excited to be starting this new chapter of my life with The Mercedes Enterprise,” Juarez said.
