I Promised My Daughter: Cazares’ race for Uvalde County Commissioner

By Magdaleno Leno Rose-Avila | Special to The Enterprise

Javier Cazares has decided to run for election as a write-in candidate for Uvalde County Commissioner Precinct 2. He is the father of Jacklyn Cazares. Jacklyn and twenty other innocent people were gunned down and killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022.

Like most parents, Javier never imagined that he would lose his daughter to such horrific violence. Because of the tragic events of that day, he and his family felt compelled to stand up and fight for justice for his daughter and all the victims of that day. They are hoping to see accountability and responsibility at the local, state, and national level. He, along with other parents and family members, will continue to advocate, speak from the heart, and ask others to do their part in preventing future tragedies like those that took the life of twenty-one beautiful people on May 24th, 2022. This tragic event should have never happened.

There are large murals honoring the victims of the Robb Elementary school placed on the walls of businesses throughout Uvalde, Texas. Javier takes time to show visitors the lovely mural that was created in honor of his daughter, Jacklyn.

Javier is a hard-working father. Like most people, he never thought about holding a political position. Running as Uvalde County Commissioner will not be an easy campaign. The incumbent has held this office for 15 years as well as two other write-in candidates. It is an uphill struggle, but one Javier is passionate about winning

Javier works hard at campaigning and being a suitable candidate. He is learning how to reach out to voters and to raise money to win the election. He also makes sure to attend meetings at the school board, city council meetings and congressional hearings, press conferences, rallies, and marches in pursuit of justice. His goal is to be part of creating changes that would ensure saving the lives of more students in the future.

As he campaigns, Javier has gained the support of State Senator Roland Gutierrez and from Beto O’Rourke, the Texas gubernatorial candidate. The victims’ family members and many community supporters impacted by the events of May 24th, 2022, are also incredibly supportive of Javier’s election endeavors. He was also recently endorsed by Dolores Huerta, President of The Dolores Huerta Foundation and Co-Founder of the famous United Farm Workers’ Union.

Javier will be reliving that day of agony as he campaigns and speaks in public about the painful memory of the day his daughter’s and other innocent lives were lost to gun violence. It is a terrible nightmare, but he made a promise to his daughter that he will do everything within his power to protect all children. We have seen him take these steps from day one. We look forward to an election win for Javier and holding office to continue his journey to protect human lives from gun violence.

Javier is not a polished public speaker like most politicians, but his passion for this issue cannot be denied. Javier has demonstrated how important his and any other concerned citizen’s voice is to help end the senseless violence that has engulfed our nation. Javier embodies the very essence of the famous words of Mahatma Gandhi— “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
