On Sunday, October 4, the Platicas talk show, created by Mercedes High graduate Raul Garcia Sr., will be hosting founding member of Colegio Jacinto Trevino, Lupe Casares. The talk show is held every Sunday from 2-3 p.m., and features several guests through the duration.

Platicas is a talk show that brings people from all over the nation to have discussions about topics within the Chicano community. Garcia and Narciso Aleman, also a Colegio Jacinto Trevino founding member, came up with the idea to create a show of some kind where they can talk about these topics with a wide audience. 

Garcia’s friend died before he could see the fruits of their labor, but ever since then, the show has been a success; able to garner attention from across the states, and regularly brings in a large gathering of people in each zoom session. 

With guest speakers such as Jesus Cantu Medel, Mark Guerrero, and many others, there have been various voices that have made themselves known thanks to this meeting, and this includes Lupe Casares. 

Lupe Casares is a successful Mexican American Author, more widely known for his work in being a founder of the first Chicano led college in the nation, the Colegio Jacinto Trevino, which was a very important part of his life . 

“I had two parents that were pacifists, and they used all that information to garner interest in me to learn…” Casares said. “There was a lot of groups like us throughout the United States who wanted to build a college, who were educators who wanted to write a curriculum, we weren’t the only ones…” 

Casares hopes to reach as many people as possible by talking about the unveiling of the historical marker dedicated to the college, even though it no longer exists. 

“The Colegio stands there today as a monument even though it’s not there physically” he said.
