The annual Al Smith Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 was awarded May 22, 2026, to Christopher Paul Garza, II, a 2026 graduate of Mercedes High School. Pictured with Christopher is Mrs. Jeanne Venecia, Secondary Director with the Mercedes school system.  Al Smith was a senior English teacher and UIL Coordinator at Mercedes High School for many years before he became principal of Taylor Elementary in Mercedes.  This scholarship has been  awarded  in Al’s memory by his wife for several years now to honor him for the great educator he was.
