After a summer of competing with teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state, the Mercedes Tigers are setting focus onto the upcoming season. 

The Tigers suffered losses against Arlington, Austin Anderson and Cy Ranch and ended their run at the Texas 7-on-7 State Tournament with a 18-20 defeat against Laredo United. 

Despite losing several key players from last year’s squad, the Tigers are gearing up to make a run to the postseason and contend for the District 15-5A title. 

With the new district realignment, the Tigers will be facing district newcomers Gregory-Portland, Corpus Christi Ray and Donna, alongside returners Brownsville Lopez, Pace and Porter.

With returning players such as junior Frankie Salinas, who was named Offensive Utility player of the year last season, and Nathan Gonzalez, who was named Defensive Linemen of the year last season, the Tigers will have talent on both sides of the ball.

The key to the Tigers’ success this upcoming season will be the high powered offense they boast, which features junior Noah Buenrostro, Robbie Sanchez, and brother duo Louie and Liam Rincon. 

The Tigers will open the season against the PSJA Bears on Aug. 27 at PSJA stadium.
