In Loving Memory of Jose Gonzales Jr.
May 27, 1940 – June 7, 2026
Jose Gonzales Jr., (Joe) went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 7, 2026. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born on May 27, 1940, in Mercedes, Texas, to Jose Gonzalez and Maria Castaneda. Throughout his upbringing, Joe sought refuge in school athletics and achieved numerous accomplishments as a student-athlete. He was the starting running back for the 1957 Mercedes High School football team that advanced to the state quarterfinals and competed in sprinting events for the varsity track team. His athletic success earned him a track and field scholarship to Pan-American University following his graduation from Mercedes High School in 1958.
Determined to earn an education, Joe hitchhiked his way through college while competing for two years in track and field for Pan-American University. Through hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1962. Following graduation, Joe enlisted in the army reserves and was determined to further his studies. He earned a master’s degree in Social Work from Texas A&I Kingsville, followed by an additional master’s degree in School Administration from Pan-American University.

Joe returned home to Mercedes and began what would become a remarkable 34-year career with Mercedes Independent School District. He coached athletes in multiple sports and was known for instilling discipline, character, and a strong work ethic in those under his guidance. One of his proudest achievements as a coach was mentoring Ernesto Briones, who became a Texas State Champion in the 1600-meter run. Joe’s commitment to education and leadership also carried over into his work with school administration, where he served as a vice principal and continued making a positive impact on generations of students and families.
In 1966, Joe married the love of his life, Janie, and together they built a beautiful family centered on love, faith, and togetherness. Family was Joe’s greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. He treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Joe remained deeply involved in the Mercedes community throughout his life. He actively participated in several civic and service organizations, including the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus of Mercedes. He believed strongly in giving back to the community that had given him so much and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. He also remained committed to supporting his beloved Mercedes Tigers and celebrating the accomplishments of those around him. He was a source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love. His warm smile, gentle spirit, sense of humor, and steadfast faith will be deeply missed.
Joe is survived by his children: Jay Gonzales; Jeanne (Jose) Venecia; Judy (Jr.) Gutierrez; Jaime (DeeDee) Gonzales; Jorge (Lisa) Gonzales; Jessica (Andy) Peña; Benito (Marissa) Gonzales, and Scott (Sandra) Hernandez. He is also survived by his 25 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, 3 siblings, extended family members, former students, colleagues, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.
He is preceded in death by his wife Janie Gonzales, siblings Gilberto Salinas, Salvador Salinas, Jose Gonzalez, Alma Flores, Mike Gonzalez, nephew Benito Garza, great-granddaughter Grace Madison Gutierrez, parents, and in-laws.
While we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived—a life devoted to God, family, education, and service. Joe’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the values he instilled in those fortunate enough to know him.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
