Local Church Celebrates 117 years of Service

The First Presbyterian Church celebrated its 117th birthday. 

Church Parioshoner Ofelia Martinez led the Sunday Bible School on that Sunday on Jan. 15th. They Spoke about sacrifice and learning revisiting the story about John the Baptist and his Cousin Jesus Christ. 

During the Church Service the church read scriptures from the Bible, the church chldren were asked to come up to the alter to say a prayer and the  worship service was led by Reverand David Mcamm. The church has alternating weekly revrendes who lead the Sunday service.

The current members celebrated the church’s birthday with a fellowship meal, and the singing of the Happy Birthday song to the church together. 

Worship services are held In the present church every Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome.  The Bible Study begins at 10 a.m.

In 1909, the Presbyterian people of the town of Mercedes gathered at the home of Judge S.P. Silver, 305 South Missouri Avenue for the purpose of organizing a Presbyterian Church. Twentyone people came into the church and a session was organized. 

By the end of that year Rev. S.M. Glasgow was called to hold services in Mercedes as well as San Benito, Harlingen and McAllen. The First Presbyterian Church in Mercedes was built in 1912 at the corner of Missouri and Third Streets. By then Rev. Glasgow was the full-time minister in Mercedes.

 The church building was constructed in 1912, featuring a distinct Mission Revival-style parapet, which is common among early Mercedes structures. The church, located in the Rio Grande Valley, underwent significant remodeling in 1947 to add classrooms and a kitchen.

The present home of the First Presbyterian Church was built in 1970 by Paul Shrank and grandson, Martin Brewer while Leo J. Tripp was minister.
