Junior Black Belt Oace Closner kicked off the 13th Annual Texas Kajukenbo Memorial Tournament in unforgettable fashion, playing the national anthem on his electric guitar. His rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” set an inspiring tone for the afternoon of karate competition.
The event, was hosted by the Mercedes, Texas Kajukenbo Karate School, led by Grandmaster Armando Saldana—a 9th-degree black belt. More than 200 competitors from around Texas, Argentina and Puerto Rico showcased their skills and tested their abilities in the ring.
Kajukenbo Association of America President Kelly Gaylord McCormick was a special guest at the tournament.
Closner wasn’t the only student Saldana spotlighted. During an intermission, he invited student Ariana Cruz to perform a tai-chi kata in celebration of her battle against cancer. All eyes were on her as she gracefully executed her moves, drawing admiration from the crowd.

Grandmaster Saldana took over the school after his teacher, Grandmaster Johnny Valdivia, passed away from cancer. Honoring Valdivia’s final wish, Saldana continues to host the hometown tournament as a fundraiser for cancer support efforts. Proceeds benefit the Light of Hope Foundation, which supported Valdivia and his family during his illness.
In another touching moment, Saldana asked the crowd to give a round of applause to one of his youngest students, Laurissa Rodriguez, a junior black belt also fighting cancer.
Mercedes Mayor Oscar Montoya attended the tournament and praised the community spirit of the event.
“This is my third year coming out, and I tell you, you can feel the energy as soon as you walk in,” Montoya said. “Watching all these youngsters do what they do, and all the family members pouring so much love and attention into their kids—that’s what helps us grow as a city and as a region. Children, keep doing what you’re doing—we are super proud of you. Welcome to the City of Mercedes. We appreciate you being here and continuing to grow this tournament.”
