Mercedes Library to host History Harvest on Friday

Julien Juarez | The Mercedes Enterprise

The Hector P. Garcia Memorial Library will be hosting their History Harvest from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday, May 29th. In conjunction with the Mercedes Historic Preservation Commission, the event hopes to capture the history of Mercedes directly from its residents.

Dr. Carlos Cantu, one of the organizers of the event, invites law enforcement veterans, elders, and young people to attend the event. In order to get these testimonies, library staff and Cantu himself will conduct oral interviews with people who come by in both Spanish and English.

These sessions will be private, but recorded in order to preserve each story that is told to the interviewers, and participants will be provided with snacks as well.
Marisol Vidales, library director and commission officer, says that much of the history for Mercedes and the RGV as a whole is missing. Through her work with the Historic Preservation Commission, she has had many people ask questions that cannot be answered due to a lack of information.

In order to bring the past to the future, Vidales asks that families get together and record their own stories of their families, ensuring that memories are not forgotten.
