Mercedes History: Colegio Jacinto Treviño Takes Center Stage

STAFF REPORT
A powerful chapter of South Texas history will take center stage on May 28, 2025, at the Historic Cine El Rey Theatre in McAllen, as community members gather to explore the legacy of Jacinto Treviño and the rise of Chicano resistance in the Rio Grande Valley.
The event, titled “Colegio Jacinto Treviño and Resistance in the Rio Grande Valley,” will begin at 6:00 p.m., with a special viewing highlighting the 1910 incident in Los Indios, Texas, and the remarkable story of the man behind the name. Often left out of mainstream narratives, Treviño’s story and the creation of Colegio Jacinto Treviño — the first and only independent Chicano community college in the United States — will be shared with attendees.
Guest speakers include Dr. Jose Villarreal from the UTRGV Sociology Department and Mr. Lupe Casares, a founding member of Colegio Jacinto Treviño in Mercedes, Texas. The evening will also feature special musical performances by Los Hermanos Lopez of San Benito.

The event aims to educate and inspire, shining a light on a largely untold story of activism, education, and cultural pride in the Valley.
All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Admission is free.
