Former Mercedes Enterprise Sports Writer Passes Away

STAFF REPORT

The Rio Grande Valley journalism community is mourning the loss of Henry Leonard Miller, a respected and longtime sports journalist, who passed away of natural causes at his home in McAllen, Texas, on April 10, 2025. He was 58.

Miller was a former sports writer for the Mercedes Enterprise, contributing from 2018 through 2019. He was a veteran editor and reporter for The Monitor’s daily sports page  and RGV Sports for many years. He dedicated his life to telling the stories of athletes and sporting events across the Valley, bringing energy and integrity to every story he wrote.

At the Mercedes Enterprise, Miller covered volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, and football, consistently highlighting the achievements of local student-athletes with care and passion. Beyond Mercedes, he made a lasting impact as the sports editor for The Monitor and RGV Sports, where he worked tirelessly to ensure the sports desk never missed a headline. He was known for his dedication to getting the story right and for his commitment to making sure sports coverage received the prominence it deserved—often fighting for front-page placement when it mattered most to the community.

“Henry was a newsman through and through,” said a former colleague Raul Garcia Jr. “He understood the importance of local sports and made sure every big win, rivalry game, and standout athlete got the spotlight they deserved. He was a mentor, a friend, and a fierce advocate for sports journalism in the Valley.”

Friends and family are now rallying behind Miller’s daughter, Camilla Ann Miller, through an online fundraiser organized in his memory. The GoFundMe account was launched to help Camilla cover funeral expenses and provide support in the difficult days ahead.

“Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference and is deeply appreciated,” the family shared. “Thank you for your kindness and support during this difficult time.”

Miller will be remembered not only for his journalistic contributions but for his deep love for the community and the athletes whose stories he told so well. A memorial service is being planned, with details to be announced.
